The Basics on “Card Check (mate)”

 

The world of power politics is not all that different from the relationship between a dog and a fire hydrant.  In the issue mislabeled by the unions as the “Employee Free Choice Act” and known by the Chamber simply as “Card Check” it is clear that without a vigorous effort against the bill, business will be playing the role of the hydrant.

 

Many of the Chamber’s members have heard about this issue but remain confused about it.  Here are the basics of the issue and why it is the single most serious threat

ABEX Awards in Business Excellence Winners Announced

The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce and Industry presented two ABEX (Awards in Business Excellence) Awards at the April 16 ceremony at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.  The first award honored the best new business started within the last three years.  Molded Fiber Glass Companies of Aberdeen was the winner of the New Kid on the Block Award.  Business of the Year honors went to Valley Queen Cheese Factory of Milbank.  Each received an elegant granite trophy.

2009 Governor's Giant Vision Winners Honored

 

As host of the Governor’s Giant Vision Business Awards Program, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry President David Owen announced the five winners of the 2009 business competition and three winners of the student competition.

30 YEARS OF HIGHLIGHTS & HISTORY

Supporting YBA - a Thirty Year Tradition

 

It all began in 1979 with HB1245, a law which stated a free enterprise course be taught in either elementary or secondary schools in South Dakota.  The leadership of the SD Chamber of Commerce realized the lack of economic education in the high schools might not be addressed with the new law.  In response to that concern the “Economic Education Task Force”, chaired by Jerry Simmons of Sioux Falls, was established.   At the Board of Directors meeting on October 25, 1979, the Task Force recommended and the Board approved the institution of a week long summer program for high school seniors and educators.
